When I am afraid,
I put my trust in you.
—Psalm 56:3
Jim was a chronic worrier. A friend offered to do his worrying for him for $300,000 a year. Jim agreed, and they drew up the contract. Once signed, the friend asked Jim where he was going to get the $300,000. “That’s your worry now,” Jim replied. That probably didn’t end well.
But Peter tells us there is a legitimate way to deal with anxiety.
Anxiety can hit you when you least expect it. Sometimes it’s fleeting, and sometimes it seems to take up permanent residence. What’s the solution? Listen to some music? Go for a run? Maybe, but distractions often come up short.
So, what is Peter’s prescription for dealing with it? “Cast all your anxiety on [God] because he cares for you” (1 Pt 5:7).
Unrealistic? Not if you believe the last four words: “he cares for you.”
God’s strength is available to those
who are aware of their weakness.
