What Does God Look Like?

Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father.”
                           —John 14:8

The teacher wandered the room, looking at the pictures her students were drawing.

“What are you drawing, Tommy?” she asked.

“I’m drawing a picture of God.”

“But Tommy, we don’t know what God looks like.”

“You will when I finish this picture,” he said.

I expect the tyke’s depiction was as authentic as that of any artist or scholar.

Have you ever wondered what God looks like? Philip did. Jesus told his disciples, “If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.” Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father.” Jesus responded, “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” (Jn 14:7–9.

Philip got an up-close look at Jesus. You, on the other hand, have seen him in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. And when you have seen Jesus, you have seen what God looks like.

In the gospels, God drew what he looks like
on the canvas of history.
