I secretly nicknamed him “Yowbut.” He had an impressive supply of talent—and a boatload of pessimism. No matter how well things were going, his catchphrase was, “Yeah, but it won’t last.”
I secretly nicknamed her “Imdone.” She had extraordinary skills and an impressive education—but no appetite for persistence. Her reaction to any rejection of her project or recommendation was, “I’m done!”
Last I heard, “Yowbut” was working in a minimum-wage job far below his talent level, and “Imdone” was unemployed.
Success is rarely determined by education, talent, or skills. It’s usually determined by a refusal to quit.
The people I’ve known who have achieved at a high level have been those who had a never-give-up mindset.
The spiritual application is, “Straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal” (Phil 3:13, 14).
