According to your faith will it be done to you.
—Matthew 9:29
They were blind.
What they wanted was their eyes fixed. What Jesus wanted was their answer to a question:
“Do you believe I am able to do this?”
“Yes, Lord.”
“According to your faith will it be done to you.”
Do you get the feeling that the cure was conditional? That he was saying he would heal them, but only to the extent of their faith. That they would see only as much as their faith allowed them to see?
Ask us if we believe the promises of God and we’ll say of course we do. But Jesus’ tête-à-tête with this blind duo leaves us questioning how much we would have been able to see if we had been one of those fellows; and wondering if the same limits apply to our faith today.
The crucial question is,
“Do you believe he is able?”
