He chose us in him before
the creation of the world.

John tells us that Jesus was with God in the beginning and had his hand in creation: “Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.”
Paul tells what happened before creation: “He chose us in him before the creation of the world.”
In Eph. 1 Paul spells out what happened in the past—he chose us (v. 4); what happens in the present—he adopts us (v. 5); and what will happen in the future—he guarantees our eternal inheritance through redemption and forgiveness (vv. 7, 13-14).
Before time. In time. Beyond time.
