Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more.
—Hebrews 10:17
“I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more” (Jer 31:34 ESV).
Thank God we live on this side of that promise.
The sacrifices of the old covenant “were not able to clear the conscience,” but were only “external regulations applying until the time of the new order” (Heb 9: 9, 10).
Under the old system there was “an annual reminder of sins” (Heb 10:3). The best believers could hope for was that their sacrifice would pay off their sins for a year; only to get a renewal notice twelve months later to pony up for another year.
But “we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all time” (Heb 10:10).
Forgiveness is undeserved, but
gladly given and gratefully received.
