Remembering Mary

What she has done will also
be told, in memory of her.
        —Mark 14:9

Today we play a part in fulfilling a promise of Jesus—the promise that a certain dear lady would never be forgotten.

Her name was Mary. She did a lovely thing when she anointed the body of Jesus with a flask of exorbitantly expensive perfume: worth more than a year’s wages.

The disciples were indignant. “Why this waste?” they howled; it should have been sold and the money given to the poor.

Jesus said, “Leave her alone . . . She has done a beautiful thing.”

“Wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her,” he said.

And so it is today.

She didn’t say a word, but many a word of praise has been said about her.

The quota for critics is full, but there’s
still lots of room for encouragers.
