Time for a Break

Oh, that I had the wings of a dove!
I would fly away and be at rest.
               —Psalm 55:6

From age eleven until his death at ninety-six, cellist Pablo Casals’ life was consumed with practice and performance.

He played for the queen in Madrid and Queen Victoria in London. He performed at the White House for Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. He entertained royalty all over the world.

When an injured hand temporarily sidelined him, he allegedly said, “Oh boy, now I don’t have to play the cello.”

Everyone needs a break now and then.

Jesus often retreated from crowds to be alone.

Knowing his disciples needed periods of solitude as well, “he said to them, ‘Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest’” (Mk 6:31).

You need a little R&R too. Don’t feel guilty about taking it.

Spending time alone allows you to hear
your own thoughts and God’s voice.
