Your Yardstick

[W]ith the measure you use,
it will be measured to you.
       —Matthew 7:2

Today’s text is a statement that appears three times in three different contexts in your New Testament.

Matthew uses it concerning the way you judge others: “[I]n the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Mt 7:2).

Mark uses it concerning the way you receive Jesus’ teaching: “Consider carefully what you hear . . . With the measure you use, it will be measured to you . . .” (Mk 4:24).

Luke uses it concerning the way you give: “Give, and it will be given to you. . . . For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Lk 6:38).

The yardstick with which you measure
is the yardstick with which you will be measured.
