Start . . . and Don’t Stop

[W]e will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
                       —Galatians 6:9

Years ago, I asked a physically fit fellow, “What’s the best exercise plan?” He answered, “Any plan will work. There are only two important rules: first, you gotta get started; two, you gotta keep at it.”

Two days later, I saw this sign at a Yard Sale:

Exercise Bike – Rowing Machine – Treadmill
Like New!

Did you know that 18 percent of those who join a gym in January drop out before the end of February? And that 80 percent quit within five months?

Now, let’s get serious! “Physical exercise has some value, but spiritual exercise is much more important, for it promises a reward in both this life and the next” (1 Tm 4:8 NLT).

In your New Year’s Resolutions, prioritize Bible study and prayer. There are two important rules: you gotta get started; you gotta keep at it.

Initial enthusiasm is common.
Persistence is uncommon.
