Smile and Give Thanks

Be thankful in all circumstances.
         —1 Thessalonians 5:18

The apostle Paul counseled us to be joyful always and thankful in all circumstances. That’s a tall order. But here, in an Erma Bombeckish tongue-in-cheek tone is a list of what one woman says she’s thankful for.

For my automatic dishwasher because it lets me get out of the kitchen before the family comes back for their after-dinner snacks.

For a husband who attacks small repair jobs around the house because he usually makes them big enough to call in the professionals.

For children who put away their things and clean up after themselves. They’re such a joy I hate to see them go home to their own parents.

For teenagers because they’ve given me an opportunity to learn a second language.

For the smoke alarm because it lets me know when the turkey is done.
