“Why?” Questions

I am the Lord, and there is no other.
                   —Isaiah 45:5

I don’t know why a tornado demolishes one house and skips over the one next to it. I don’t know why cancer ravages the body of a devoted wife and mother and leaves a drunken deserter father untouched.

But I believe God is in ultimate control—that he isn’t sitting on pins and needles, peering over the edge of heaven wondering what on earth is going on—and what’s next.

Some happenings don’t square with our concept of a loving God—they seem cold, unfair, and heartless. So, we have a lot of “Why?” questions.

My go-to verse for answers I don’t have is Deuteronomy 29:29—“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us.” There are “Whys?” that I have to leave there.
