Small Town Humor

[There is] a time to weep and a time to laugh.
                          —Ecclesiastes 3:4

It was a small town where everybody knew everybody.

Our little church was growing. We were running out of space. We needed to build.

Dwight Mann was a prominent young attorney who had the gift of getting things done. I was delegated to recruit him to chair the building committee. I made an appointment, pitched the request, and he agreed to tackle the assignment.

A dozen people were in the waiting room when we came out of his office. I had a nodding acquaintance with all of them. In a loud voice, Dwight said, “Let me be sure I have this right. You want the car and the house, and you want her to get the dog and the kids?” The room erupted in laughter.

Thank goodness, they knew he was kidding. I think.
