Can’t, Won’t, or Will?

I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me.
    —Philippians 4:13

“I can’t get over my bitterness.’
“I can’t conquer my temptation.”
“I can’t forgive my spouse.”
“I can’t overcome my resentment.”
“I can’t control my tongue.”

Is “can’t” the right word? Or would a more accurate word be “won’t”?

“What I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do,” wrote Paul (Rom 7:15). Most of us could write our initials in the margin.

“What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body?” Paul continued. Do I hear an “Amen”?

He found an answer: “Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Rom 7:24, 25).

Stop saying, “I can’t.” And don’t say, “I won’t.” Say, “With the help of God, I will!”

Be an “I will” person.
