Job’s Victory

In all of this, Job did not|
sin by blaming God.
           —Job 1:22

You won’t find a better man than Job: “[He] was blameless and upright; he feared God and shunned evil” (Jb 1:1).

Yet, he lost everything. His ranch was raided, his servants were killed, all ten of his children died in a storm, and his health crashed.

Bankrupt and broken, he said: “The Lord gave me what I had, and the Lord has taken it away. Praise the name of the Lord!” (Jb 1:21).

“In all of this, Job did not sin by blaming God” (Jb 1:22).

How could anyone—much less a “blameless and upright” person—face such devastating loss and not blame God? It seems to me there are at least three reasons:

  • he counted on the resurrection (Jb 19:26);
  • he acknowledged the sovereignty of God (Jb 42:2);
  • he admitted his limited understanding (Jb 42:3).

Put those three thoughts in your pocket.
