Learning to Walk

Walk worthy of the calling
to which you were called.
      —Ephesians 4:1

A proud grandma showed me a phone video of her grandchild’s wobbly first steps. Fall. Try again. Fall. Try again.

In Acts 3, Peter grasped a lame beggar’s hand, helped him up, and said, “In the name of Jesus, walk.” Learning to walk is slow business. But this chap, lame from birth, had never walked a step in his life; now, the first time on his feet, he’s power walking and doing jumping jacks.

Your progress may be more like the first paragraph in this essay than the second—one unsteady step at a time.

Paul programs the first steps: “Walk worthy of [your] calling . . . be humble and gentle; be patient” (Eph 4:1–2).

Take the first step, humility. Good! Next step gentleness. Excellent! Now, next step patience. There you go. You’re doing great!

Step by step, you’re learning to walk.
