Enter through the narrow gate.
—Matthew 7:13
“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” So goes a Yogi Berra “Yogiism.”
In Matthew 7:13, as Jesus winds down his Sermon on the Mount, we’re at a fork in the road. “Wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction . . . small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life.”
Two gates, two roads, two destinations.
We must enter one of the gates, travel one of the roads, and arrive at one of the destinations. Those are the only options that confront us, for there is no third gate, third road, or third destination.
The time for decision has come. We’ve arrived at the fork in the road, faced with the indispensable necessity of choice.
There is only one choice
for there are only two options.
