Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
—Matthew 5:9
A peacemaker is, first of all, one who refuses to be a disrupter of peace. “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace” (Eph 4:3). “As far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone” (Rom 12:18).
It takes two to fight. Walking away isn’t cowardice; it often requires more strength to resist than to engage. You can’t control what others say, but you are the only one who can control what you say. Silence is often the best answer.
“The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield . . .” (Jas 3:17).
Peacemakers “will be called children of God,” who initiated “peace, goodwill toward men” by sending Jesus to earth to “reconcile us to himself” (2 Cor 5:18).
Sometimes, the loudest voice in peacemaking is silence.
