The tongue is a small thing,
but what enormous damage it can do.
—James 3:5
A piercing scream came from the rambunctious little girl’s bedroom. Dad rushed to the room and found his daughter in tears.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“I burnt my t-t-tongue,” she whimpered.
“You did what?”
“I burnt my t-tongue!”
“How in the world did you do that?”
“I licked my n-night-light.”
The curious child isn’t the only one with a tongue problem. In fact, James wrote that the heat is on the inside: “The tongue is a flame of fire” (Jas 3:6).
Here are a couple of verses that are worthy of eye-level Post-it notes.
“Don’t talk too much, for it fosters sin. Be sensible and turn off the flow” (Prv 10:19 NLT).
“Help me, Lord, to keep my mouth shut and my lips sealed” (Ps 141:3 TLB).
Think before you speak.
