In the same way you judge others, you will be judged.
—Matthew 7:2
“Judge not.” If the next sentence doesn’t stop us in our tracks when we’re about to throw a judgmental dart, I don’t know what will: “For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
The yardstick we use in judging someone is the yardstick God will use in judging us. The measure we use on others is the measure God will use on us. If we judge without mercy, we will be judged without mercy (Jas 2:13).
Regarding our propensity to criticize and censure, Chrysostom said, “Thou art making the judgment-seat dreadful to thyself, and the account strict.”
John Stott noted, “If we enjoy occupying the bench [Judge’s podium], we must not be surprised to find ourselves in the dock [on trial].”
Dare we ask God for grace
if we refuse to give it?
