Do not think of yourself
more highly than you ought.
—Romans 12:3
Self-praise stinks up the place.
Conceit smells bad in any setting.
There is no greater deception than self-deception. Those who achieve success are especially vulnerable.
Achieve—but get over it. Scholars are particularly susceptible. A good education is an asset. But believe it or not, most people are unimpressed with your GPA.
Go for the maximum of your potential—but don’t boast about it. You put your pants on one leg at a time, just like everyone else.
God labels “Haughty eyes and a proud heart” sin (Prv 21:4), and he hates them (Prv 6:17).
“Let someone else praise you, and not your own mouth” (Prv 27:2).
Scrap the swagger.
