Teach us to number our days.
—Psalm 90:12
In his book If Only It Were True, Marc Levy fictionalizes a bank crediting your account with $86,400 each day. The account can’t carry over a balance from one day to the next, so any remaining balance is deleted. Obviously, you would draw out every dollar every day.
Levy points out that, in fact, each of us does have such an account. Every day we are given 86,400 seconds, and at the end of every day we forfeit whatever time we failed to spend wisely.
Our time on earth is limited. In Psalm 90, we are reminded to be thoughtful, not frivolous, in considering our sojourn here: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Today you are the oldest you’ve ever been—and the youngest you’ll ever be.
Carpe diem.
