Understanding God

Who has known the mind of the Lord?
                     —Romans 11:34

His life was in a bad place. Frustrated, he said, “I don’t understand God!” My unspoken thought was, “If we could fully understand God, he wouldn’t be God.”

We have glorious glimpses of God in Scripture, but fully understanding his wisdom and ways is beyond our reach.

Paul’s doxology at the close of Romans 11 expresses it this way: “Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor? . . . To him be the glory forever! Amen.”

Our challenge is to trust him, submit to him, depend on him, and stand in awe of him, giving him all honor, glory, and praise (Rv 5:12).

Soli deo gloria.
To God alone be glory.
