Come to me, all you who
are weary and burdened.
—Matthew 11:28
Jesus’ invitation is not issued to a group, but to individuals—to ALL who are weary and burdened, or, as the New English Bible has it, to those “whose work is hard, whose load is heavy.” In other words, to everyone, for every person has carried, is carrying, or will carry a heavy load.
The invitation is not formal and clique-limited; it’s personal and open to all. There is no dress code: not Black-tie, Formal, or Semi-formal attire—it’s Come as you are. Whatever your past, whatever your present, just come to him.
Just as I am, without one plea
But that Thy blood was shed for me
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee—
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
