Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?
—Habakkuk 1:3
The bad guys seemed to be winning.
“How long, Lord, must I call for help, but you do not listen? . . . Why do you tolerate wrongdoing?” (Hab 1:2, 3).
Habakkuk was perplexed about God’s timing and God’s tolerance. “How long” are you going to permit this mess to continue? And “Why” do you tolerate it?
The same issues fluster us: “How long” will moral rot continue, and “Why” does God continue to tolerate it?
God isn’t subject to our timing. What we consider unjustified delays is God’s domain, not ours.
Of this we can be sure: he is in control. In the words of Kittie Suffield:
God is still on the throne,
And he will remember His own;
Tho’ trials may press us and burdens distress us,
He never will leave us alone.
Trust God. Don’t dictate to him.
