Powerful is your arm!
Strong is your hand!
—Psalm 89:13
World War II had been spreading its slaughter for four months as 1939 wound down. In a BBC radio broadcast, King George VI reached out to the ears of British citizens. He closed his speech with the preamble to Minnie Louise Haskins’ The Gate of the Year.
I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
As the old year dies and a new one is born, put your hand into the hand of God: “That,” indeed, “shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
Walk boldly into the New Year
with your hand in the hand of God.
