That Was Fast

The life of mortals is like grass.
                 —Psalm 103:15

Whew! That was fast! Here we are, in the final days of the year. Are you suffering from calendar whiplash?

Suddenly” is the sneak-up-on-us word that comes to mind. Suddenly, we notice that there are a lot of candles on our cake. Suddenly, we are aware that some of our abilities have faded. Suddenly, we realize that some of our long-held interests have lost their appeal.

Suddenly, we realize that life is short!

That came as no surprise to the psalmist: “The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone” (Ps 103:15–16).

These realities are no cause for despair but simply a reminder that we have a limited number of days and that they should be used wisely and joyfully.

Every day is a God-given gift.
