The Servant Spirit

The greatest among you will be your servant.
                             —Matthew 23:11

Andy Martinez was on the bag as the caddie for championship golfers Johnny Miller for 12 years and Tom Lehman for 23. The moment he stepped into the caddie shack and put on the white jumpsuit, his servant spirit showed. It wasn’t his name on the back of his whites; it was the name of the golfer whom he served.

During his final meal with his disciples, Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist and washed their feet, even though he knew that one of those twelve would betray him and that eleven would desert him.

Within hours, he would agonize in the Garden, endure trials, and be crucified. Yet, he chose to show those disciples—and us—servanthood.

Look closely, and you may see the disciples’ names written on that towel; squint, and you may see yours too.

Serve. Don’t demand to be served.
