Live a life worthy of the
calling you have received.
—Ephesians 4:1
Often, the first question we ask a person is, “What do you do?” Sometimes followed by, “What led you to choose that?” Occasionally, someone will respond, “It is my calling.”
That accurately expresses the Bible’s perspective on ministry. When Jesus called his early disciples to become “fishers of men,” he was saying, “I have a job for you,” and was inviting them to join his ministry.
There are many ministries to which people are called: preacher, youth leader, nursery attendant, teacher, janitor, carpenter, bus driver, volunteer, parent, caregiver, leader, follower. The list is long, for ministry exists in every place at every level. Any distinction in the church between “professional servants” and “lay servants” is only of function, not of importance.
Service is not a pathway to greatness; service is greatness.
The ideal place to presently serve God
is where God has presently set you down.
