Remembrance

Do this in remembrance of me.
                 —Luke 22:19

Jabesh Gilead was in the crosshairs of the sadistic King Nahash.

“I’m going to mark you as mine by gouging out the right eye of every last one of you,” said Nahash. You can fight me and die or submit to me and live the rest of your lives as one-eyed slaves.

Saul, newly anointed King of Israel, said, “Not on my watch!” And by noon the next day, Nahash and his hoodlums were history. (See 1 Sam. 11:1–11.)

Four decades later, the Philistines killed Saul and nailed his nude corpse to a wall at Beth Shan. The still-grateful citizens of Jabesh Gilead retrieved his body and gave him a proper burial. It had been 40 years since he had rescued them, but they had not forgotten. (See 1 Sam 32:11–13.)

Does that tug at your heart with remembrance of another rescue?

Nothing proclaims ingratitude
more loudly than forgetfulness.
