Would We?

You shall have no other gods before me.
                         —Exodus 20:3

Idols made by human hands “have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths” (Ps 135:15–17).

An idol is carried, set in place, “and there it stands. From that spot it cannot move” (Is 46:6). It “must be carried because it cannot walk” (Jer 10:5).

We wouldn’t be so foolish as to worship anything so lifeless, would we? We wouldn’t put anything “dead” in the place of the “living” God, would we? We wouldn’t give devotion to any position or possession ahead of God, would we?

Accomplishments and accumulations have no feelings. You may love them, but they won’t love you back.

Don’t love anything that can’t love you back.
