Talking tash predates our day by centuries. Goliath started talking smack when confronted by David, a mere boy: “I’ll give your flesh to the birds.”
And he “cursed David by his gods. It wasn’t a fight between a giant and a runt; it was a clash between false gods and the living God.
David was well-aware of the contestants: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty . . . for the battle is the Lord’s” (1 Sam 17:45, 47).
Our battles are ultimately between the non-gods of our age and the living God. How are the gods of passion, politics, and power working out?
“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (Eph 6:10).
