We have this treasure in jars of clay.
—2 Corinthians 4:7
In my view, one of the most attractive things about Paul is the view he had of himself. He had to defend his apostleship, but did so reluctantly, saying that he refrained from boasting because he didn’t want people to think more highly of him than he considered warranted (2 Cor 12:6). He desired to be seen only as a common container of a tremendous treasure, “to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us” (2 Cor 4:7).
The content is more valuable than the container. The message is more important than the messenger.
Even so, the vessel is important. Paul was indispensable. So are you. You may be limited in some ways, but your position is essential. It was true of Paul, and it is true of you.
You are special. No one can take your place.
