Put First Things First

Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.
                             —Matthew 6:33

Matthew 6:25–34 is Jesus’ brief homily about worry. He says don’t do it.

His prohibition of worry about material things is not a forbiddance of forethought, but of anxious thought.

Don’t misunderstand his teaching.

Trusting God’s care doesn’t exempt us from working to earn a living. Jesus said God feeds the birds. How does he do it? By providing the essential resources upon which they feed themselves.

Nor does trusting God’s care immunize us against calamity. It’s true that no bird falls to the ground without God’s awareness. But birds do fall. So do airplanes. So do humans.

Still, Jesus’ emphasis is clear: we will be preoccupied with something; his advice is to make it the kingdom and righteousness.

You have options. Choose wisely.
