Command those who are rich . . .
not to put their hope in wealth.

James didn’t beat around the bush. He scorched the self-centered wealthy: “Your life on the earth has been one of luxury, pleasure, and endless consumption” (Jas 5:5 VOICE). Or, as the New Living Translation has it, “satisfying your every whim.”
The Bible doesn’t condemn wealth, but it warns of its hazards. Pitfalls stalk the person whose center of attention is on “more.”
The nonstop drive for more is demanding and exhausting, leaving little time, thought, or energy for the pursuit of more important matters.
“My people have done two evils: They have turned away from me, the spring of living water. And they have dug their own wells, which are broken wells that cannot hold water” (Jer 2:13 NCV).
Will the wells you’re digging hold water?
Dig for living water.
