These are written that you may believe.
—John 20:31
John records seven of Jesus’ miracles (signs):
- Turning water into wine (2:1–11)
- Healing a nobleman’s son (4:46–54)
- Healing a paralytic (5:1–15)
- Feeding the 5,000 (6:5–14)
- Walking on water (6:16–21)
- Healing a man born blind (9:1–7)
- Raising Lazarus from the dead (11:1–45)
Thus, the first half of John’s gospel is often called “The Book of Signs.”
Then, as John nears the end of his book, he writes: “Jesus performed many other signs . . . But these are written that you may believe . . .” (Jn 20:30–31).
Jesus seems to be reaching across the years, from those signs to us, saying, “I have done this once so that you will know that I can; after that, you must just trust me.”
Trust Him.
