Homiletics professor Dr. Fred Craddock was asked who, other than his parents, was the most influential person in the formation of his life. He said it was Miss Emma Sloan—his childhood Sunday School teacher.
Fred said he didn’t remember her ever trying to explain scripture. She just taught them to memorize it—using the alphabet.
A—“A soft answer turns away wrath.”
B—“Be ye kind, one to another.”
C—“Come to me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden.”
D—“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
Etc.
“Nothing in my life has made such a difference as those verses,” said Craddock. “The Spirit of God brings them to my mind time and time and time again.”
