Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.
—Colossians 3:23
On September 7, 1860, the steamboat Lady Elgin, with 398 passengers on board, collided with another vessel in Lake Michigan.
Edward Spencer, a university student, swimming relentlessly, brought seventeen of those passengers to safety. Finally, an exhausted Spencer had to be carried to his room. Barely able to speak, he whispered, “Did I do my best?”
Vince Lombardi, considered by many to be the greatest football coach in history, said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task.”
In sports, academics, on the job, in marriage and parenting, in Christian service, the big question is, “Did I do my best?”
Do the best you can, where you can, while you can.
