Those who exalt themselves will be humbled.
—Matthew 23:12
Navigating his ship through the storm, the captain thought he was on a collision course with a large vessel he spotted in the distance. He ordered the approaching ship to alter its course ten degrees south. The reply came back, “Alter your course ten degrees north.” Infuriated, he ordered, “I’m a Captain, this is a battleship; alter your course ten degrees south!” “I’m an ensign third class,” came the reply, “this is a lighthouse; alter your course ten degrees north.”
Things aren’t always as they seem. Humility is in order.
Considering how much there is to know, we know very little. As Will Rogers said, “We’re all ignorant, just on different subjects.”
Avoid a collision with a lighthouse. Be sure to include humility when you pack your bag—and don’t leave home without it.
Humility is a virtue many preach, but few practice.
