The Prepositional Christ

You are in me, and I am in you.
                 —John 14:20

Are you old enough to remember television before remote control?

To turn it on or off, change channels, or adjust the volume, you got some exercise; took a hike to the set, punched buttons, and turned knobs.

Now, you move only your thumb.

Jesus has an even more advanced system.

British Bible scholar F.F. Bruce wrote: “He accompanies His agents. He does not energize them by remote control; He is present with them by His Spirit. They work for Him, but He works in them.’

After charging his disciples to “go and make disciples” and to teach those new disciples to “obey everything I have commanded you,” he promised them, “I am with you always” (Mt 28:19–20).

He is not distant, but close—in you, working through you.

He is your prepositional Christ—
in you, with you, through you, for you.
