What Do You Most Want?

What can anyone give in exchange for their soul?
                             —Matthew 16:26

Renowned coach Tom Landry once said, “My job is not very complicated, but it’s often very difficult. You see, my job is to get a group of men to do what they don’t want to do so they can achieve the one thing they most want.”

Jesus’ instructions aren’t complicated, but getting us to follow them is difficult: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mt 16:24).

You need go no further than his Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7) to know that the way of the Christian life is rigorous and demanding. Therein is the narrow way that leads to life.

Of course, that’s all irrelevant unless you’re sure about what you want most of all. Have you come to terms with that: certain and clearheaded?
