God is our refuge and strength.
—Psalm 46:1
An old country preacher said, “I may tremble on the rock, but the rock don’t tremble under me.” We have our times of fragility and vulnerability, but as Christians, our foundation is solid no matter what.
Psalm 46 has it this way:
God is our refuge and strength,
an ever-present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear.
This is the text that inspired Martin Luther to write the words we sing:
A mighty fortress is our God,
A bulwark never failing;
Our helper He, amid the flood
Of mortal ills prevailing.
And tho’ this world with evil filled,
Should threaten to undo us;
We will not fear, for God hath willed
His truth to triumph through us.
God is sovereign. Rock solid. We are secure, no matter how insecure our times may seem.
God assures us and secures us.
