Faith is a Gift

You are the Messiah,
the Son of the living God.
     —Matthew 16:16

“Who do you say I am?” Jesus asked. With unequivocal certainty, Peter responded, “You are the Messiah!”

It wasn’t because he was uncommonly intelligent or had an advanced degree in theology that Peter answered as he did. Jesus said, “This was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.”

Our faith, like Peter’s, is a “gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Eph 2:8–9).

If our faith were the product of our own intellect and piety, we could boast of our superior wisdom and spirituality. On good days, that would make us haughty, and on bad days, it would make us fragile. But when we acknowledge our faith as a gift, it makes us humble on good days and secure on bad ones.

God has gifted you with faith. Give thanks.
