Humility

Do not think of yourself
more highly than you ought.
            —Romans 12:3

Political campaigns bring out the worst in people. Truth is abandoned. Slander is routine. Reputations are demolished. Families are fractured.

Win at any cost—that’s the way the game is played. The campaign trail is elbow-to-elbow with little people wrapped in big egos, spending gazillions of dollars and spilling tons of ink to tell you how great they are.

T-shirt theology leaves something to be desired, but this one got it right. On front it said, “There is a God.” On back, “And you’re not Him.”

Paul’s words hit hard: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves” (Phil. 2:3).

No greater challenge has ever been packed into five words than this: “consider others better than yourselves.”

Humility is not thinking less of yourself,
but thinking of yourself less.
