God’s Names

The name of the Lord is a strong tower.
                       —Proverbs 18:10

His name was Joseph, but the apostles called him Barnabas because it was a name that described him—Barnabas means “Son of Encouragement” (Acts 4:36). Biblical names often identified the person’s predominant character trait.

Names applied to God in the Bible are descriptive of his characteristics and capabilities. Here are seven of them:

Elohim — the God above all gods
El Shaddai — the almighty God
Jehovah Jireh — the God who provides
Jehovah Rapha — the God who heals
Jehovah Shalom — the God of peace
Jehovah Shammah — the God who is present
Yahweh — the loving, covenant-keeping God

Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”

God always lives up to his name. You can depend on it.

Surrender the outcome to God.
