You Don’t Have To If You Don’t Want To

The lazy will not get what they want,
but those who work hard will.
            —Proverbs 13:4

Author Annie Dillard wrote: “You do not have to sit outside in the dark. The stars neither require it nor demand it. If, however, you want to look at the stars, you will find that darkness is required.”

Annie’s words lead me to this:

You don’t have to use your time productively if you don’t want to. Time neither requires it nor demands it. If, however, you want to accomplish anything worthwhile, you will find that self-disciplined use of time is required.

You don’t have to grow intellectually and spiritually if you don’t want to. The books on your shelf—and the Bible on your desk—neither require it nor demand it. If, however, you want to learn and grow, you will find that self-disciplined study is required.

Stagnation or growth? Your choice.
