Lay Down Your Burden

Blessed be the Lord,
who daily bears us up.
     —Psalm 68:19

In The Legend of Bagger Vance, war hero Rannulph Junah is an honorary participant in an exhibition match with two golfing legends. He starts strong, but haunting combat memories cause him to fall apart.

Bagger Vance, Junah’s mystic mentor and caddie, pulls him aside and says, “Ain’t a soul in this entire earth ain’t got a burden to carry that he can’t understand. You ain’t alone in that, but you’ve been carrying this one long enough. It’s time to lay it down. . . . now is the time. I will be with you.”

Are you haunted by past memories and paralyzed by present problems? You’ve been carrying that sack of rocks long enough. It’s time to lay it down. “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you” (Ps 55:22).

In the presence of problems
depend on the promise of God’s presence.
