About Those Donkeys

Go and look for the donkeys.
            —1 Samuel 9:3

“The donkeys belonging to Saul’s father Kish were lost, and Kish said to his son Saul, ’Take one of the servants with you and go and look for the donkeys’” (1 Sam 9:3).

Neither Kish nor Saul could have imagined where that search would lead. As Saul set out on his tedious trek, God was working behind the scenes, guiding his steps to cross paths with the prophet Samuel and be anointed as the king of Israel.

God’s providence operates in seemingly random ways. He may send you on a confusing, even disagreeable, course that takes you to where he wants you to be, doing what he wants you to do.

You may be unaware of how God’s plans for your life come together, but don’t dismiss the possibility of providence in your call to search for the donkeys.

Take it in stride.
It may be providential.
