In your presence there is fullness of joy.
—Psalm 16:11
What brings you delight? A possession? A place? A person?
Occasionally, we get a sobering glimpse of what life would be like without it. Driving away from the hospital, where you’ve learned that your loved one has stage 4 cancer, puts things in perspective: at that point, the kind of car you’re driving doesn’t matter, the style of your clothes doesn’t matter, your gadgets don’t matter.
It’s good to enjoy what God has given us. And good to be aware that it is God who has given them. You couldn’t grieve over loss unless he had given you someone to love. “I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing’” (Ps 16:2).
Take refuge in him, for in him is there “fullness of joy” and “pleasures forevermore” (Ps. 16:1, 11).
Cherish God’s gifts.
And the memories of them.
