(This week let’s explore a few psalms)
The Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
—Psalm 1:6
Psalm 1 makes a clear distinction between the righteous and the wicked; between their present actions and future destinies.
The righteous choose their company carefully: rejecting the advice of the wicked, repudiating the example of sinners, and refusing the companionship of those who reject God (v. 1). They delight in God’s Word and meditate on it daily (v. 2). They are like a well-rooted and fruitful tree (v. 3).
The wicked, on the other hand, are like dry chaff blown away by the wind (v. 4). No root system. No stability. No fruit.
The Psalm anticipates Jesus’ teaching that we’re all travelers: on the road that leads to life or the road that leads to destruction (Mt 7:13–14).
Each chooses the direction—and the destination.
